The reasons why you should not install metal roofs over shingles
February 9, 2024The roofing industry often faces a poor reputation due to inconsistent work quality, lack of transparency, unscrupulous practices, and unreliable contractors. Scams, subpar installations, and customer dissatisfaction contribute to the negative perception.
In this post, I will discuss the most common signs of lousy roofing contractors. It’s intended to help homeowners identify and stay away from them.

Let’s get started.
The most common signs of bad roofing contractors

We have been working as a roofing company in Rhode Island. It’s been more than 30 years since we noticed many issues where homeowners were victimized. Many of these homeowners contacted us to fix things or completely replace or redo the roofing work they got from bad contractors.
From these practical experiences, we found some common patterns. I listed and explained them below.
Lack of Proper Licensing and Insurance
Contractors should be licensed and insured to ensure they meet industry standards and provide protection in case of accidents or damages.
Licensing ensures that contractors meet established standards of competence and professionalism. It assures customers that the contractor is qualified, follows industry regulations, and is accountable for the quality of work performed.
Additionally, licensed contractors typically carry insurance, offering protection for the homeowner and the contractor in case of accidents or damages.
So, if you want to stay away from bad contractors, never hire those who don’t have licenses and insurance.

No Physical Business Address
Legitimate contractors have a physical office or business address. Be wary of those who only provide a P.O. Box or operate without a fixed location.
A physical business address is essential for good contractors because it establishes a clear and tangible presence. It provides legitimacy, indicating the contractor has a stable and established business.
A physical address also offers customers a reliable point of contact, enhances transparency, and allows homeowners to verify the contractor’s credibility.
Contractors without a fixed location or only providing a P.O. Box may raise suspicions about their legitimacy and commitment to quality service.

Poor or Nonexistent References
Reputable contractors can provide references from previous clients. Avoid those who cannot or are unwilling to share customer feedback.
However, every contractor starts with zero reviews or references (past work samples). A new contractor can also provide good roofing service. It might be hard for homeowners to sort them out.
But if you spot any nonexisting reference, it means there are problems with that specific contractor.
So, if you want to avoid hassle and don’t want to take any risks, go with professionals who have proven track records. Hiring professionals might cost more than newbies, but it’s worth it.

Unrealistic Low Bids
Extremely low estimates may be a sign of subpar materials or craftsmanship. Quality work comes at a cost, so be cautious of significantly underpriced quotes.
Some homeowners specifically seek or hire those who offer services at a meager price. Many bad contractors take advantage of this opportunity.
So, if you want quality work, ensure the bid/offer aligns with your requirements.

No Written Contract
Professional contractors will provide detailed written contracts outlining the scope of work, materials used, costs, and timelines. Avoid those who rely solely on verbal agreements.
A written contract is mandatory if you claim insurance. Also, you can’t chase for specific changes if you don’t have a written agreement.

Inadequate Communication
Contractors should be responsive and communicate clearly. If a contractor is difficult to reach or lacks transparency, it could lead to problems during the project.
You can figure this out by contacting them and reading testimonials on 3rd party platforms like Google Maps, TrustPilot, etc.

Unwillingness to Provide Written Estimates
